What are the Best Files to Submit to Your Printer?

When you are preparing a print campaign or designing promotional products, you’ll start designing your product before downloading it as a file to send to your printer. Choosing the right file to submit for print may be a challenging decision. Pelican Promo understands the stressful nature of deciding which design to use, which is why we are here to help you choose the file that is appropriate for the product you are ordering.

Portable Document Format is the file type that is most commonly preferred among printers. PDF utilizes formatting technology from a variety of desktop publishing applications, making it possible to send a document and have it received exactly as intended. Plus, it is super easy to create these documents.

Encapsulated PostScript files are preferred for printing large signs and banners. This file uses a vector format designed for PostScript printers and imagesetters. Vector graphics and files are scalable formats, independent of objects and shapes. These images are easily resizable without losing quality and are perfect for printing graphic designs or high resolution illustrations. EPS files are easily created through Adobe or other design programs.

Joint Photographic Experts Group is a file format that is preferred for images, which tend to be very small files. JPG files lose quality once compressed and saved, which, sadly, may never be recovered.

Tagged Image File Format handles rasterized and bitmapped images. These files can be saved in a variety of color formats and compressions. TIFF files are preferred for high resolution images as their compression maintains image quality and clarity.

.GIF and .PNG

Graphics Interchangeable Format is a file format for storing graphic images into up to 256 colors. These files are known for their high quality output and are used in cases of short form videos. Portable Network Graphics are a powerful alternative to a GIF file and feature better compression, saving a large amount of storage. PNGs are especially useful when saved as a transparent background as they can then be placed on top of another image.

ZIP files contain one or more files that are used for data archiving and have been compressed to reduce overall file size and allow easy transfers. Once a recipient has received the ZIP file it must be unzipped to decompress the file to allow access.
